A heavy-sweat Henley with a Liberty-print buttoned placket and a contrast collar — that's the iconic piece French premium brands (Balzac in particular) have made their signature. Here's how to hack the Paulo pattern by Cousette to sew yourself a homemade version in about 4 hours, with a pro-level finish.
Level: intermediate ⭐⭐
Total time: 3 to 4 hours
Style: Henley / rugby polo, unisex, Balzac × Liberty inspired

The combo that makes the magic: heavy sweat × Liberty
The secret to this look is the contrast between two seemingly opposite fabrics: a heavy sweat fabric (our high-weight french terry around 320 g/m²) for the structure and warmth of a true outerwear piece, and a Liberty Tana Lawn print — fine, floral cotton — used only on the buttoned placket. Contrast in fabric weight + color + pattern: that's what makes the piece instantly recognizable.
This is exactly the code Balzac Paris has built into its Henleys for several seasons now: not a classic polo, not a classic sweatshirt, but the elegance of a British-inspired Henley reinvented à la française.
Why the Paulo pattern is perfect for this hack
The Paulo pattern by Cousette is a unisex polo (men's and women's) with a kids' version. It's one of the few French-speaking sewing patterns that natively features a buttoned placket with a collar — exactly what we need as the base for this hack. It comes in short or long sleeves, sizes XS-XXL adult and 2 to 14 years kids.
Materials: the complete list
Everything is available at Calissone, online and in our Aix-en-Provence shop. The exact list of products used for this hack:
- Pattern: Paulo unisex and kids polo pattern — Cousette
- Main fabric: Red heavy sweat jogging fabric — about 1.50 m at 140 cm width (adjust to your size)
- Ribbing: Red ribbing — 30 cm
- Placket fabric: Liberty Tana Lawn Meadow Song — 30 cm is enough
- Snaps: 3 to 5 mother-of-pearl snaps 12 mm (with setting tool)
- Polyester 120 thread in red (matching the sweat)
- Machine needle: stretch 80/12 or jersey 80/12 (the heavy sweat has stretch — see our needle guide)
- Tools: sewing scissors, pins, buttonhole foot, iron
Good to know: 30 cm of Liberty Meadow Song easily covers the placket. If you want to push the hack to a Liberty-lined collar (optional), plan for 50 cm.
Why Liberty Meadow Song works so well
Liberty Meadow Song (also known as Margaret Annie or simply Meadow with some sellers) is a classic from Liberty of London: a floral motif with soft tones but enough contrast to pop on a red solid sweat. Its Tana Lawn (Liberty's finest printed cotton) sews up beautifully with a universal 80/12 needle, and holds its colors wash after wash.
Other Liberty options that would work for this hack: Capel (the great floral/dots classic), Wiltshire (the blueberry motif), Betsy (small floral buds). Pick by mood — the beauty of the hack is that no version is ever the same.

Step-by-step hack instructions
Step 1 — Adapt the Paulo pattern
The Paulo pattern natively includes a buttoned placket — that's what makes this hack so simple. You barely need to modify the base pattern. Print the pattern to your size (or use our A0 printing service at our Aix-en-Provence shop to save time).
Optional tweak: if you want a stronger Balzac vibe, lengthen the body by 3-4 cm for a longer, more oversize Henley.
Step 2 — Cut the pieces
Cut the body pieces (front, back, sleeves, collar) in red heavy sweat. Cut the buttoned placket in Liberty Meadow Song — this single substitution is the whole hack. Also cut red ribbing for the cuffs and hem.
Cutting tip: heavy sweat doesn't fray but has a "nap" — cut all your pieces in the same grainline direction to avoid color variation between front and back.
Step 3 — Prepare the Liberty placket
Finish the Liberty edges (zigzag stitch or serger) to prevent fraying. Liberty Tana Lawn is fine — don't hesitate to back the placket with a light fusible interfacing (10-15 g/m²) to give it more body and prevent the heavier sweat from pulling on it.
Carefully press the seam allowances indicated by the Paulo pattern — the placket visually anchors the whole project, so take your time here.
Step 4 — Sew the body
Join front + back at the shoulders. If you have a serger, this is the perfect moment to use it; otherwise, use a stretch stitch on your machine (loose straight stitch + narrow zigzag, or a dedicated stretch stitch). Stretch 80/12 needle, red polyester 120 thread.
Sew the sleeves following the Paulo pattern. At this stage, your sweat looks like a classic — Step 5 is what transforms it.
Step 5 — Attach the Liberty placket
This is the signature step. Follow the Paulo pattern instructions for the placket attachment, simply swapping the sweat placket for your Liberty placket. A few tips:
- Pin generously (the thickness contrast between sweat and fine Liberty can create misalignment)
- Sew slowly, with a universal foot
- Edgestitch at 0.2 cm for a pro finish
- Press at every step, gentle steam, protecting the Liberty with a press cloth
Step 6 — Set the collar and snaps
Attach the collar in red ribbing according to the pattern. For the mother-of-pearl 12 mm snaps: mark each snap position with a fabric marker, perforate with the tool included with the snaps, then fix the 4 parts of each snap (male part + female part, front + back). Plan for 3 to 5 snaps depending on the placket length and the size of the piece.
Pro tip: test first on a scrap (sweat + Liberty + interfacing) before setting them on your garment. A misplaced snap is immediately visible.
Step 7 — Finishing: cuff ribbing + hem
Attach the red ribbing to the sleeve ends (cuffs) and to the body hem. A 5 cm ribbing folded in half gives a 2.5 cm cuff — the perfect Henley proportion.
Final step: press the whole piece. And you're done. Slip it on, look in the mirror, snap a photo for Instagram. Tag us @calissone.fr 🧡

FAQ — your questions about the Paulo hack
What exactly is a sewing "hack"?
A sewing hack is the art of taking an existing pattern and modifying it to create something new. It can be a tiny adjustment (changing a neckline) or a full transformation (using a dress pattern to make a top). Here, we keep 100% of the Paulo pattern and just swap the fabrics to achieve a totally different look from the classic polo.
Why mention "Balzac × Liberty"?
Balzac Paris is a French clothing brand that popularized the Liberty-placket heavy-sweat Henley. Their version became iconic — it's the visual reference for this kind of piece. Our hack doesn't reproduce their models but takes inspiration from them respectfully — we give you the codes to sew your own personalized version.
Is Liberty Tana Lawn hard to sew?
No, it's actually one of the most pleasant cottons to sew. You can use a universal 80/12 needle, standard polyester 120 thread, and a straight stitch at 2.5 mm length. The only catch: its fineness — we recommend backing the placket with light interfacing so it holds up against the heavier sweat.
Can I do this hack without snaps, using classic buttons?
Yes, absolutely. The Paulo pattern includes the buttonhole + classic buttons option. If you go that route, pick 4-5 real mother-of-pearl buttons (~12 mm) which give the same premium visual effect as mother-of-pearl snaps. The difference: snaps are quicker to fasten, buttons feel more finished.
How much heavy sweat fabric do I need for my size?
At 140 cm width:
- Size XS-S: 1.30 m
- Size M-L: 1.50 m
- Size XL-XXL: 1.70 m
- Long sleeves: +20 cm
Always plan 10-15 cm extra margin for the unexpected.
Does the red heavy sweat bleed in the wash?
Like any intense red color, prewash it separately at 30°C (86°F) before cutting, and wash it alone for the first 2-3 times. That's your insurance against surprises. Our Calissone heavy sweat is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified.
What about a fitted women's version?
The Paulo pattern is unisex with a loose cut. For a more fitted look, you can: 1/ size down, 2/ pinch the side seams by 1-2 cm per side, 3/ use a dedicated women's pattern from our tops & blouses department where we list several alternatives.
